The Song of Christmas Week One

Luke 1:38; 46-55

OPENING PRAYER TIME
Ask God to open your hearts to each other during the discussion time. Ask God to give you illumination into his word, and prepare your hearts and minds for this Advent season.

READING TIME
Spend time reading Luke 1:38; 46-55.

38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,

47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.

51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;

53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,

55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

DISCUSSION TIME

  1. What do you find beautiful in this song?

  2. When have you found refuge in the Lord in the midst of a difficult season?  How did you sense God’s presence during that time?

  3. When have you struggled to get noticed?  Why is this frustrating?

  4. Do you think it is wrong to desire to be noticed?  Why or why not?

  5. Does it help you to know that God notices you?  Why or why not?  Why is it not good enough at times to know that God sees and God cares?

  6. How can we become better with resting in the truth that God sees us?

CLOSING PRAYER TIME
Spend some time praying for each other.  Pray that each of you would know Jesus better during this Advent Season.
